Frequently Asked Questions
Won't exercise make my arthritis worse?
No, appropriate exercise is now considered essential treatment for osteoarthritis. While high-impact activities might aggravate symptoms, our carefully prescribed exercises strengthen the muscles around your joints, improve joint stability, and actually help reduce pain. All exercises in our program are evidence-based and specifically selected for people with osteoarthritis.
I'm waiting for joint replacement surgery. Is this program still suitable for me?
Absolutely. Research shows that improving strength and function before surgery leads to better outcomes and faster recovery afterwards. Our "prehabilitation" approach can help you maintain function while waiting for surgery and prepare your body for optimal post-surgical recovery.
How quickly will I see results?
Most participants notice some improvement in pain and function within 4-6 weeks of consistent participation. More significant changes typically occur over 3-6 months. The key is regular participation and gradually challenging yourself as your body adapts.
Do I need a referral to join the OPAL program?
No referral is required to join, although a referral from your GP may allow you to access Medicare rebates through a Chronic Disease Management Plan. We also welcome clients through WorkCover, TAC, DVA, and NDIS with appropriate documentation.
