"I need support for depression and mental wellbeing"
Exercise for Mental Health
Exercise as a Powerful Tool for Mental Wellbeing
At Exercise for Rehabilitation & Health, we understand the profound connection between physical movement and mental health. Our specialised mental health exercise programs provide structured, supportive approaches to help manage conditions like depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders.
Exercise is now recognised as a first-line treatment for mild to moderate depression and an essential complementary approach for many other mental health conditions1. The right kind of movement can stimulate the release of mood-enhancing neurochemicals, reduce stress hormones, improve sleep quality, and enhance overall wellbeing.
We create a welcoming, non-judgmental space where you can engage with exercise at your own pace. Our approach recognises that some days are harder than others, and we meet you exactly where you are on your mental health journey.

Our Approach to Mental Health Exercise Programs
We understand that starting or returning to exercise when struggling with mental health can be particularly challenging. Our approach is gentle, gradual and completely non-judgmental.
Your program begins with a comprehensive assessment where we discuss:
-
Your current mental health challenges and treatment
-
Previous exercise experience and preferences
-
Any physical health considerations
-
Potential barriers to regular activity
-
Your personal goals and motivation
Based on this conversation, we develop a personalised program that might include:
-
Appropriate cardiovascular exercise at intensities that boost mood without overwhelming
-
Strength training to build physical confidence and capability
-
Mind-body activities like yoga-based movements or tai chi elements
-
Outdoor exercise when appropriate for added psychological benefits
-
Group options for those who benefit from social connection
-
Strategies for difficult days when motivation is low
We work closely with your mental health professionals to ensure a coordinated approach to your care. Many clients find that exercise enhances the effectiveness of their psychological therapy and/or medication.
Frequently Asked Questions
I have no motivation. How will I possibly stick with exercise?
This is completely normal with depression and many other mental health conditions. We start with very small, achievable goals and build gradually. Success builds upon success. We also focus on finding activities you genuinely enjoy and discuss practical strategies for days when motivation is low.
Will exercise replace my need for medication or therapy?
For some people with mild depression, exercise can be as effective as medication or therapy. However, for most, exercise works best as part of a comprehensive approach that may include psychological therapy and/or medication. We view exercise as a powerful complement to other treatments, not necessarily a replacement.
I feel self-conscious exercising. How do you address this?
Your comfort is our priority. We offer private sessions in a clinical setting rather than a gym environment. There's no pressure to wear particular clothing or perform exercises that make you uncomfortable. We gradually build confidence through successful experiences in a safe space.
How quickly will I notice benefits for my mental health?
Many people report feeling better immediately after a session due to the endorphin response. More substantial mood improvements typically develop over 3-4 weeks of regular activity. Consistency is more important than intensity, especially at first.
Will Medicare cover these services?
Mental health conditions often qualify for Medicare rebates through Chronic Disease Management plans or Mental Health Treatment Plans. We're happy to discuss payment options and potential rebates during your initial consultation.
